About the Organization

Backpack Buddies is a Vancouver-based not-for-profit committed to fighting childhood hunger across British Columbia. Through collaborations with educators, social workers, administrators, and additional not-for-profits, they currently support the wellness of over 5,000 children in need every week.

Objectives:
  • Create a fully responsive, easy-to-manage solution backed by WordPress CMS
  • Implement a donor-friendly design with an emphasis on localness, impact and trustworthiness
  • Construct SEO foundations to increase search traffic and future donor investments
  • Integrate authentic, transparent impact stories and ease of public assistance to drive credibility, resonation, and ultimately, donations
PHASE 1

Prototyping

Backpack Buddies provides critical food security for children in our province – but their website wasn’t doing enough heavy lifting to support their cause. A comprehensive redesign involved the reorganization of content as well as the creation of new areas to not only communicate the goals, work, and successes of the organization, but also to engage current and potential donors.

Sharing stories and creating emotional connections were the key goals for the content strategy. This website was also one of the first to be built on our proprietary site builder plugin, Foundry.

PHASE 2

Style

Backpack Buddies generates hope, and that’s what we wanted to come across in the designs. The bright style was comprised of an integration of pencil crayon-like colours, photos of school-age foods, playful background illustrations, and authentic photos of real local children and their families. The result is instantly impactful, and vivid accents quickly draw the eye to key content.

Phase 3

Bringing it All Together

When you visit Backpack Buddies’ new website, you’re presented with the very real impact of child hunger in BC. But the site doesn’t present the issue in a sad or triggering manner. Instead, it instills hope and potential, engaging visitors to be a part of the solution by getting involved. The site is also much easier for their team to manage, so they can continue to share their meaningful stories.
