Overview

About the Organization

The First Nations Summit is a First Nations political organization in British Columbia. It was founded in 1992 after the formation of the British Columbia Treaty Commission and the British Columbia Treaty Process. It represents the interests of First Nation band governments involved in the treaty process.

Objectives

  • Improve overall site architecture and navigation to enable easy browsing and a smooth user experience
  • Create a user-friendly “Resources” section with filtering and searching to ensure maximum value to users
  • Develop an events calendar to clearly display upcoming events
  • Reorganize and expand current blog for enhanced search and browse-ability of content
  • Implement a fully responsive solution backed by WordPress CMS

Phase 1: Prototyping

Prototyping

When the First Nations Summit first approached us, they were struggling to communicate and disseminate information effectively through their website. On the backend, their website was extremely difficult to update, making it impossible to respond in real time to current events and new developments. It was also difficult for users to navigate the wealth of information available on the site.

Applying the bulk of our focus to information architecture, we worked with the First Nations Summit to design a site that made the BC treaty process more accessible through user-friendly navigation of information, tools, and resources, as well as a WordPress set up that was easy for website administrators to update quickly.

Phase 2: Style & UI Design

Style

For the First Nations Summit, we wanted to make a site that was as equally engaging as it was informative. First-time users and band members should immediately feel like they have the appropriate information and tools to participate in the BC treaty process. This is why we focused on creating an easy-to-navigate events calendar and a searchable Resources page.

The colour palette was inspired by the natural beauty of British Columbia – blue water, green forest, pink salmon, earth tones, etc. – and First Nations art. Fluid, clear typography makes the wealth of information available to site visitors easy to digest and less overwhelming.

Phase 3: Bringing it all together

Bringing it All Together

Whether you’re new to the BC treaty process or already actively involved in it, the redesigned First Nations Summit website makes it easy to find the right information at the right time. It keeps users informed on current issues facing First Nations groups in BC, and is an invaluable, trusted online resource to those who are able to access it. Visitors from the government and media will also find it to be a useful source of information and communication.
