Phase 1

Prototyping Early

Designing a Christmas themed site ranks pretty high up there on the fun-factor scale. Working with such a dynamic team was really inspiring and as a result the prototyping stage really brought to life some of the fantastic elements that makes this site incredibly interactive for the user. Given that there is a lot of content, yet it was important to do some visual storytelling, we worked together to compartmentalize copy so that the user is able to really get a feel for the market.

Phase 2

Style Concepts

Designing this site brought back warm memories of Christmases of our childhood. While we focused on using the traditional colours of Christmas, we also incorporated tones of aubergine for an extra bit of warmth. We had a ton of fun when it came to choosing appropriate typography, using fonts that makes one reminiscent of writing you would see on a Christmas gift under the tree or on a letter addressed to Santa. The stitching on the buttons and calls to action makes the online experience look crafted and handmade, much like the product you would find at the market.

Bringing it all together

Celebrating their 5th year, the Vancouver Christmas Market now has an amazing online presence that engages the user and helps them plan their visit to the market. With advanced isotope filtering to look up vendors by type or country, as well as specialized event filtering, and a custom map - not only is the market team able to maintain this easily by drag & drop backend functionality, but the pop-up points and map markers make this experience so pleasant for the user. The developers added a little extra icing on the cake with cool button hover state effects and a funky stacked accordion drop down to manage the content in their FAQ section.
